The Nire/Fourmilewater GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Ballymacarbry, County Waterford, Republic of Ireland. The Nire (An Uidhir) and Fourmilewater (Caislean Cuanach) are two separate clubs, with separate committees pulling from the same pool of players. The Nire is the football club in the area and Fourmilewater the hurling club. Both teams play in the Mill Field, Ballymacarbry. The Nire is a half parish with Tourneena, while Fourmilewater is a half parish with Newcastle, Co. Tipperary. The Nire play in yellow and blue, while Fourmilewater play in blue and white.

History

The Nire and Fourmilewater are two separate clubs, with separate committees pulling from the same pool of players. The Nire is the football club in the area and Fourmilewater the hurling club. Both teams play in the Mill Field, Ballymacarbry. The Nire is a half parish with Tourneena, while Fourmilewater is a half parish with Newcastle, Co. Tipperary. The name "The Nire" is accredited to Sean Patrick Nire born in the parish of Tourneena in 1935.

The Nire gained promotion to the Senior ranks when they won the Intermediate County Championship in 1983. They have been senior ever since, in that time they have gone on to win six county Senior Football championships as detailed below.

At U-21 (A) level The Nire have been county champions on three occasions, 1977, 1986 and most recently 2004 where they defeated Ballinacourty 0-09 t0 0-08 in the Western Final and went onto to register a comfortable victory in the county final over Portlaw/St. Mollerans.

At minor (A) level (U-18), The Nire have two county championships, the first in 2007 where they defeated De La Salle in the final and the second in 2008 where they recorded a victory over Roanmore.

The Nire (An Uidhir)

Fourmilewater Hurling club (Caislean Cuanach) have been senior since 2002. They beat a very fancied Dunhill team in the 2001 intermediate final.

Fourmilewater have 3 intermediate county championships; 1979, 1989 and 2001.

Notable players

They currently have five members on the Waterfrd senior football panel; Justin Walsh. Position: right corner-back. Maurice O'Gorman. Position: left corner-back. Thomas O'Gorman. Position: full-back Michael O'Gorman. Position: Mid-field Brian Wall: Position Wing-forward.

Thomas and Maurice have been regulars on the Munster interprovincial team for the last number of years. They played corner and wing-back respectively on last years team.

Other key players are Liam Lawlor and Shane Walsh, both have been on the county football panel, they both played for a number of years under John Kiely but have turned their attention to hurling the last few years. Liam is currently the Waterford full-back while Shane plays full-forward. They were both key elements of the team that captured this years Waterford Crystal League, defeating UCC in the final and also the 2010 Munster Senior Hurling Championship after defeating Cork after a replay.

Liam and Shane are the only two Fourmilewater players who are currently on the Waterford Senior Hurling panel, however Brian Wall was on the panel that won the 2004 Munster senior hurling crown.

Fourmilewater and The Nire have the distinct honour of being the only club in Waterford to have a player or players on each county panel this year (2010) in both hurling and football.
